Despite concerns about the effectiveness and safety of the drugs, China has become the largest exporter of Covid-19 vaccines in the world and delivered more than 500 million doses to 112 countries and territories in the first half of the year, according to the Chinese portal Caixin.
The portal provides data on exports from Chinese customs and the opinion of the British analytical company Airfinity, which estimates that exports from China exceed shipments from all other countries producing vaccines against Covid-19 combined.
The drugs from Chinese pharmaceutical companies Sinopharm and Sinovac have received conditional approval from the World Health Organization (WHO), and according to Chinese media reports, both companies will sell a total of 550 million doses by mid-2022 and distribute them through the global COVAX distribution program.
The WHO wrote in its analysis of the Sinopharmu and Sinovacu vaccines, which significantly reduce the risk of hospitalization and death from Covid-19. However, there are still concerns around the world about the safety and effectiveness of Chinese drugs.
Sinovac Moderna Sinopharm vaccines have been shown to be 50 to 80% effective in clinical trials in various locations around the world, which is why they were lower than those of Moderna or Pfizer. There were also statements about the lack of transparency in the publication of data. The problems are especially related to protection from the more contagious Delta variant.
Sinopharm has found its way, in particular, in Hungary, although neither it nor other Chinese drugs have yet been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). In May, the Agency announced the start of an accelerated rolling review of the Sinovac vaccine, but did not say when a result could be expected.
Singapore authorities have approved Sinovacu for use, but it is only used in private clinics and is not used in the national immunization program. Due to the lack of data on the effectiveness of this vaccine against the Delta strain, those who received it are not considered officially vaccinated and cannot count on the associated benefits.
On the other hand, Seychelles recorded a sharp increase in the number of infections in May and restored epidemic restrictions, despite the fact that more than 60% of the population was fully vaccinated there at that time. Most of these people received two doses of the Sinopharm vaccine, while the rest received two doses of AstraZeneca. However, the authorities cautioned against comparing the effectiveness of individual drugs on this basis, as they were prescribed to different age groups.
